SIRANI
Thirteen Contemporary Painters and an Arresting Baroque Masterpiece
The exhibition SIRANI – Thirteen Contemporary Painters and an Arresting Baroque Masterpiece is a tribute to the Old Master Elisabetta Sirani (1638–1665), who was one of the most illustrious artists of her time and, amongst other achievements, was the founder of the first art academy for women.
This booklet is published on the occasion of the very first public presentation of Sirani’s painting David with the Head of Goliath from 1655. It is flanked by 13 contemporary artists who have each responded to this masterpiece with a painting of their own: Ellen Akimoto, Alexander Basil, Norbert Bisky, Kyle Dunn, Adrian Ghenie, Christoph Hänsli, Hortensia Mi Kafchin, Brandon Lipchik, Lydia Pettit, Cornelia Schleime, Kiriakos Tompolidis, Hugo Wilson, and Uwe Wittwer.
