Uwe Wittwer
Im Widerschein – Scherben
With his epic series Im Widerschein – Scherben, Uwe Wittwer has turned his attention to those Old Master works from the Berlin Gemäldegalerie that were lost in the final days of the battle of Berlin in 1945. To this day, it is unclear whether these paintings – including masterpieces by Caravaggio and Rubens – were actually lost to fire or stolen by the Red Army. Wittwer has breathed new life into 94 of these works. An essay by Juerg Judin and Pay Matthis Karstens explains the background of this artistic “revival.”
